Raila Odinga who is a former Kenyan prime minister has applauded former president, Goodluck Jonathan for conceding defeat in the 2015 presidential election to Muhammadu Buhari.
The Punch reports that the former prime minister said Jonathan’s action had renewed the hope for democracy in Africa as his action gave credibility to the African and Nigerian electoral processes.
Odinga made this comment at the 2016 Zik lecture series at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Anambra state. He said:
“Before then most African leaders would not concede defeat as an incumbent.”
He noted that dictatorship, corruption and ethnicity were the major problems hindering development in Africa. Ethnicity is the disease of the elite. They are the people who would always fan the embers of ethnicity and divisive tendencies whenever they lose their selfish interest.”
